Round 1 - Records Records Everywhere!!!

What a fantastic kick off to the season, the sun was shining, the balls were flying and the records were getting smashed. And when I say records I mean records, 4 to be exact. Gold Creek Country Club really put on a great day with a brand new tee area near the club house for us to kick off the 2011 season.

There is clear evidence that everyone has been training over the Christmas break, if it was not a RWLCA record that was broken, or smashed it was a personal best that was accomplished.


 

First to start the record train going was Robert Cowdroy, Robert qualified through Drummond Golf Fyshwichk in the Amateur division and showed that he was a very worthy winner. It only took Robert two attempts to show just what he was capable of, he crushed a drive of 343 metres to give himself a new RWLCA Amateur Record and giving the other amateur competitors something to think about. Robert is now the proud new owner of the Taylormade R11 driver, kindly donated to the event by Drummond Golf Fyshwick. Robert is looking forward to round 2 where he will be stepping up to the Open division at Ballarat on the 19th March. It was locals that dominated the Amateur division with James Singline (328.4m) coming in second and Matthew Holmes (306.1m) third.


 

The next record had everyone talking well before the event, Dave Sawtell, RWLCA's only wheelchair competitor was set to attempt the Guinness World Record for the longest one handed drive from a wheelchair. The previous record stood at 113.55m which Dave did not see as a challenge beating it with a measurement of 143.7m.  Also special thanks go to Consulting Surveyors John Lowe & Associates who donated their time to officially measure Dave's measurement.
 


And then there was Daniel Lee, Lee made his debut half way through the 2010 season, since then Lee has shown that he is in it to win it. With measurements of 376.8m to start off the 2011 season shows us that he is a real force to be reckoned with. Lee recently started using MOI for his 2011 attack, a decision that I am sure that he is happy with, he may be one of the youngest competitors in the tour but he surely is not the weakest.
 


Anthony Donovan showed that all of his hard work over the Christmas break had paid off when he recorded his personal best measurement. It may not have been the winning measurement of the day, but he showed us that he means business this year.



A big thank you needs to go out to the crew at Gold Creek CC for allowing us to host the 1st round, Scott and the guys, thanks for preparing a world class Tee box and grid. Jason and Keith in the Pro Shop, thanks for getting the word out to the locals and Rodney and his staff at Drummond Golf Fyshwick, their assistance in supporting the day and bringing new competitors, was appreciated!
